The initiative delivered a female-centered summer leadership program using culturally appropriate programming to build the leadership capacity and enrich the lives of young women, ages 13-16, living in 5 priority neighbourhoods.

Workshop topics included discussions on media and critical thinking, healthy relationship, impact of crime on women and money management. Field trips and recreational activities gave participants an opportunity to venture outside of their neighbourhood and broaden their understanding of community. Young women earned an honorarium for their participation, providing those with economic barriers an opportunity to participate.

The initiative engaged 58 young women in five 8-week sessions. It connected young women, from five priority neighbourhoods, in positive spaces. Young women were able to cultivate event planning skills as the initiative culminated with a graduation in each of the communities. Young women also led the planning of a one-day conference attended by over 40 additional young women to discuss issues such as identity, healthy sexuality and bullying. Participants will bring their skills in event planning and culturally-specific programming as members of the Young Women's Legacy Initiative.
