Flemo City Media (FCM) is committed to creating sustainable opportunities for youth using urban media arts. As a youth-led, non-profit organization, Flemo City Media received first-round funding from YCF in 2006 to develop its Flemo City Radio program. The initiative engages youth who are underserved by more traditional recreation programs, providing youth with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to produce, record, set up and run CFPK radio. Participants have developed transferable skills and gained hands-on experience through training and mentorship, effectively creating employment opportunities and removing systemic barriers to employment and education. Fifth-round YCF funding will go toward renovations to space within the Dennis R. Timbrell Resource Centre, making it more accessible to youth in the community. The creation of a youth-designated space will allow FCM to share the space and collaborate with other grassroots organizations to deliver programming focused on education, mentorship, leadership development, social entrepreneurship and youth justice. The renovations will also allow FCM to broaden its services and address the lack of youth-focused programming for young people who are unemployed and out of school.
