Community Microskills Development Centre: Youth Express

This initiative trained 30 youth in Batik Art instruction at four high schools in Jane-Finch and Jamestown. 14 youth completed a "Train the Trainer" program and went on to deliver summer workshops to 40 youth in local libraries and schools.

Through the initiative, youth have gained tangible skills and knowledge, including how to complete a professional work of art and market their skills and products. Their artwork is educating the community, not just in the styles of Batik but in diversity, showcasing the beauty of different cultures and dispelling negative perceptions.

The group framed 93 art pieces that were created in the workshops, created a calendar, and put on two exhibits – at City Hall in November 2008 and at Etobicoke Civic Centre in February 2009. They are currently working with partners to establish an Artists' Guild as a way to sustain the impact of the initiative.
