This initiative is engaging youth in a new way, through food security, organic farming, health promotion and social entrepreneurship. The eight-month program consists of four stages.
The first stage engages youth participants through outreach and promotion strategies. Youth then participate in a 13-session workshop on leadership, life skills, community food security, and urban agriculture training. In the third stage, participants are hired for full-time summer employment as youth interns. Youth harvest organic produce which is donated to local food banks in Jamestown, and used to prepare weekly meals for senior citizens. Interns organize and facilitate activities for hundreds of community members. Upon completion, youth participate in an evaluation of the program and help improve the curriculum for the following term.
