Carl James
Carl E. James teaches in the Faculty of Education and is currently the Director of the Graduate Program in Sociology at York University, Toronto, Canada. A former, youth worker in downtown Toronto, the courses he teaches include: Urban Education, Adolescence, Foundations of Education, and Education of Immigrant students. In his research and publications, he explores issues of identity/identification in terms of race, ethnicity, class, gender and immigrant status; educational and occupational access and equity for marginalized youth; and the complementary and contradictory nature of sports in the schooling and educational attainments of racialized students. He is a visiting lecturer in the Teacher Training Department at Uppsala University, Sweden. His publications include Race in Play: The Socio-Cultural Worlds of Student Athletes (2005); Seeing Ourselves: Exploring Race, Ethnicity and Culture (2003).
